Abstract

The historiography of the cathedral chapters has greatly evolved over the past four decades changing our perspective of the late Middle Ages. However, there are still field to explore, like taking advantage of the sources produced by the cathedral chapters themselves, traditionally ignored due to the difficulties to access their archives, the absence of diplomatic editions and, particularly, the underdevelopment of cathedral chapter Diplomatics. By reviewing briefly the progress of cathedral chapter Diplomatics we have noticed that even though the organization of the writing office of this institution has been reconstructed, we still need to understand the operation of their document production, and what is more important, achieving recognition as an autonomous specialization with its own conceptual field.
