Abstract

In this work we analyze the operation and application of ecclesiastical justice by bishop and the cathedral chapter of Burgos during the 15th century. The jurisdiccional independence from the bishop that the cathedral chapter enjoyed, having their own judges (named jueces de las Cuatro Témporas) to try the members of the institution, caused serious conflicts between the episcopal jurisdiction and the chapter’s. By the end of the century, with the arbitration of the Crown and the Papacy, some agreements on the matter were reached, although this didn't prevent legal disputes throughout the following centuries.
