Abstract

Franciscan friar Alonso de Espina, known in his day as a tireless itinerant preacher, went down in history due to the strong anti-Jewish and anti-converso nature of his sermons, as reflected in extenso in his Fortalitium fidei (a voluminous work written around 1460). This study suggests an alternative approach to the Fortalitium fidei, giving priority to the heresiological dimension of Espina’s discourse over the better known issue of anti-Judaism. From this perspective, this paper analyses the discursive construction of the Judaizing heresy carried out by the Castilian friar and the originality with which he handles the medieval language of heresy with a view to shaping a new heretical subject: the iudei occulti.
