Abstract

Once the main tower of Murcia Cathedral and its belfry were completed, proceedings begun to supply a considerable number of bells for the twenty embrasures built in the upper levels. Although the proceedings took place in two distinct periods, the years 1790 and 1815, it is in the later that bells started to be regarded also as talismans, independently of their primary liturgical purpose. Different inscriptions were cast in the bells, dedicated to those Patron Saints of the Diocese; the belfry becoming thus a peculiar second façade, whose importance rested not in a triumphant series of images, like in the monumental «Imafronte» (the main elaborate western façade of the Cathedral, richly sculpted), but in the powerful, protecting strength of the bell sounds, a shield against all misfortunes.
