Isabella d'Este's collecting: A brief reading through the analysis of the Stivini Inventory
Abstract
Isabella d’Este was a woman who, in the Renaissance, was able to win the respect and
admiration of her contemporaries and the echo of her fame as strong remained unchanged
until today. It was a great patroness, the most relevant of her time, thanks her assiduous
pursuit of ancient artwork or value, and for her important commissions to artists of prestige.
Thanks to Inventario Stivini, written three years after her death and preserved in the archives
of Mantua, it is possible to know all the pieces of art that the Marquise collected throughout
her life. The original pieces that have come to us are few, but it is possible, with a further
studies, enrich this small catalogue, recognizing the traps still works.
