New discourses on the web: feminism in Harry Potter fandom
Abstract
Fan communities, or fandom, use the web to create new content from media products. In some cases, this content offers speeches with political themes or related to various social movements. In this way, fans can express their opinions and concerns. This study analyzes feminist-themed content that Harry Potter fans post on the Tumblr platform. For this purpose, a triangulation between two quantitative analyses and a critical discourse analysis of the posted content and the fan's profile is carried out. On the one hand, the results allow us to know how the consumer relates to the original work and, on the other hand, we also analyze hegemonic and counter-hegemonic discourses on feminism present in the fan communities.
