Abstract

This paper analyses the relation between economic phases and interregional migration in Spain for the period 1988-2001 with data from the Estadística de Variaciones Residenciales (EVR). This study establishes the existence of a relation between economic phases and the migratory dynamics of regions: youths present a bigger mobility in the expansive phases of the economy and Spanish regions play a different role in each economic phase. Immigratory regions of the 60’s and the 70’s have positive migration balances among young, and negative balances among the 55 years and older. The opposite process takes place for regions which were emigratory in the past: net emigration of young people and returns of emigrants who left the region during the 60’s and the 70’s. Interregional migration of youths is affected significantly by the phases of the economic cycle. This variation of the age migratory dynamics does not affect the 55 years and older group, its evolution being independant of the economic phases.
