Abstract

The reconstruction of the historical evolution of trends in schooling, labour market participation and leaving home for young people in Spain allow us to discover the relationships among these variables. The heterogeneity in these three aspects is evident both in terms of gender and across Autonomous Communities. Thus, while schooling years and labour force participation showed an inverse association for men, for women this relation was direct. Second, neither schooling years nor labour force participation showed any relationship with age at leaving home. Nevertheless, for men only, more schooling years meant a lower probability of leaving home. Above all, the greatest gender contrast was between labour force participation and leaving home. Whilst for men the earlier the entrance in the labour market, the higher their probability of leaving home; for women, the higher the labour force participation, the lower their probability of leaving parental home.
