ALLUVIAL BARS IN GRAVEGBED EPHEMERAL CHANNELS IN THE CAMPO DE CARTAGENA (MURCIA)
Abstract
The geomorphological dynamism of the torrential flows in the Campo de Cartagena, and generally in southeast Spain, is directly reflected in a high mobility of alluvial sediments through the section. As tthe channels are frequently unstable, the individual forms (eg simple bars) are mainly changed by the large effects of sporadic surface flows. These cause complex and variable sedimentary structures, with changes in texture. During the period 1956-1981, many bars in gravel-bed channels on alluvial fans (in the Sierra de Carrascoy and Campillo de Adentro areas) have experienced a rapid change by channel shifting and modifications in the local flow characteristics, so morphological and functional classification is difficult. This paper offers a hiearchy of gravel bars under sequential change based on form, hydraulic resistance, sediment storage and mobility.Downloads
