Abstract

Nursing professionals carry out important work evaluating the needs of patients and care-givers. They also provide the required care, as well as transmit the knowledge and skills of self-care. In the planning of care it is necessary to evaluate the Basic Activities of Daily Living (BADL), essential for self-care, such as cleaning and dressing oneself, using the bathroom among others. The objective of the present work is to evaluate the capacity of self-care in elderly people previous to hospital discharge or in the same way, measure the level of dependence/independence in the execution of BADL. For this, the Barthel index has been used as an evaluation tool. The hypothesis tested is the suitability of this instrument in the evaluation of planning nursing care. The above mentioned hypothesis has been contrasted with the application of BI in 32 patients above the age of 65 years admitted to the department of Internal Medicine at the Coria City Regional Hospital.
