Abstract

Grammar in the classroom has been and still is a subject of discussion. In the history of LT the problem has been solved in differenr ways, according to rhe perspective of each one of the merhods in fashion ar the moment. Overemphasis on grammatical practices or exclusion of grammar has been the norm. An integral or global communicative method muy offer a more adequate solution. Communicative competence is complex and the analysis of its components does not allow for the linguistic component to be excluded. On the other hand, the characterisrics of language acquisition within a natural environment suggest that the linguistic monitor is often present. From both sides we might conclude that the key for dealing with grammar in the classroom seems to be the adequate contextualizarion of linguistic or grammatical practices.
