Abstract

Piglia is a master of writing about historical trauma, and using history as a stage for telling stories is his consistent narrative style. La ciudad ausente takes “sifted” historical discourse as a basis for writing and uses the fictional text as a lens to reflect the past. Accompanying the process of “historical reconstruction”, the book highlights the potential risks of collective memory being appropriated and manipulated by power discourses in the postmodern context, as well as the impact of this process on individual memories. By focusing on the ethical dilemmas posed by the choice of memory in both the individual and collective dimensions, in a way, this work attempts to inspire readers to think about the possibility of reconstructing memory from forgetting, in a way that transcends the binary opposition between history and fiction, memory and forgetting, providing a unique cultural perspective for people to reexamine historical trauma and find their own identity.
