A SPIRAL TURN: RE-READING AND THE PREVALENCE OF THE ESSENTIALIST PERSPECTIVE IN ALEJO CARPENTIER
Abstract
This article examines, through a comparative analysis of Alejo Carpentier's scripts and his novel Concierto barroco, the persistence of an essentialist perspective on Latin American identity and the representation of cultural otherness. Ultimately, it suggests that the unresolved tension between essentialism and the attempt to project a mestizo or transcultural notion of identity onto the Americas reveals the limitations of Carpentier's literary project in addressing the challenges of identity in Latin America. This contrasts with other authors associated with postmodernity, who emphasize rhizomatic elements and a certain cultural fluidity.
