Women and the art of the “dissimulazione onesta” in Piccolomini’s “La Raffaella: Ovvero della Bella Creanza delle Donne” (1539): a philogynist work?
Abstract
The purpose of this article is to study whether Alessandro Piccolomini’s dialogue La Raffaella ovvero della bella creanza delle donne (1539) could be thought a work of philogyny, considering the elements related to the art of di/simulation applied to the most intimate sphere of women. The analysis is based on the sixteenth and seventeenth century treatises that deal completely or partially with this subject, and in particular with reference to women and on the current studies on this subject.
