Author Guidelines

Guidelines for authors

General instructions

Contributions sent to Cartaphilus, either book reviews or academic articles related to our journal's field of research (aesthetic criticism, literary criticism, art, literature, and/or cultural productions), must be original and unpublished works and may not be waiting for acceptance by any other publication. Only manuscripts in Spanish, English, French, and Portuguese will be accepted.

Scientific arbitration for the acceptance or rejection of works will be carried out by a blind peer review (anonymous), in which the evaluators must be experts on the works' contents, and unconnected to the institution or entity to which the authors belong. In case of discrepancies between the reviewers, a third reviewer will be consulted.

Submissions must be sent in digital format through the journal's website, for which it is necessary to log in (or sign up in case of the first submission) on our virtual platform. The time taken to review and inform on the works’ acceptance or rejection might be six months from receipt approximately, although this process could be extended depending on the journal's schedule.

Submissions

Contributions only will be accepted as text documents in Word format (.doc, .docx) or compatible, with Din A4 pages. The academic articles' length must be neither less than 5,000 words nor more than 15,000 words, abstract and keywords (in at least two languages), footnotes, and bibliographic references included. The book reviews, however, must not exceed 3,000 words and should include the reviewed book's cover.

It is also recommendable for authors to distribute their works' contents in three well-differentiated parts: introduction, development, and conclusion. The style must be formal and strictly comply with the orthographic standards of the Real Academia Española.

First page’s format

The first page of the document must include the title (in the original language of the writing and/or in Spanish and English), the name of the author or authors, the name of the institution or entity for which they work, and the contact information (email, phone, etc.).

Besides, the first page will include an abstract that must not exceed 200 words and up to 5 appropriate keywords (in the original language of the writing and/or in Spanish and English).

  • The article’s title in the original language and/or in Spanish and English
  • Author or authors’ name
  • Institution or entity’s name
  • Contact information (email, phone, etc.).
  • Abstract with a maximum length of 200 words in the original language and/or in Spanish and English
  • Up to 5 keywords in the original language and/or in Spanish and English

Body text’s format

The pages of the document must be numbered in the Arabic system, aligning the figure in the center of each footer. The top and bottom margins will adjust to 2.5 cm, whereas the right and left margins will adjust to 3 cm.

Times New Roman is the only font allowed, in size 12 in the body of text, with 1.5 point spacing and no leading or trailing spacing between paragraphs. The initial line of each paragraph, except the first of each heading, will present a normal indentation of 1.25 cm —the indentation must be made with the specific option of the word processor, in no case will the space bar or the tab key be used to this end. The body text will be justified (left and right-aligned).

In the case of using headings, they should preferably be arranged following the basic structure of “introduction, development, and conclusion”. For a more comfortable reading, they will be numbered (Arabic system) and separated by spaces from the body text.

The notes will go after the punctuation mark when they refer to a sentence period. However, when they refer to a single word they will go along with it. It is also recommended that the notes be entered at the foot of the page and not at the end of the document.

  • Page number (Arabic) aligned in the center of the footer
  • Top and bottom margins: 2,5 cm
  • Right and left margins: 3 cm
  • Font: Times New Roman, 12
  • Spacing: 1,5 points (no spacing between paragraphs)
  • Regular indentation (except for initial paragraphs after headings): 1,25 cm
  • Alignment: justified
  • Headings: numbered (Arabic) and separated by spaces from the body text
  • Footnotes: single line spacing

Quotation format

Quotes up to 2 lines in length will be included in the body of the text, enclosed in English quotation marks (“ ”) —when quotation marks appear within a quote, Latin or angle quotation marks (« ») will be used. But if a quote is 3 or more lines long, it must be displayed in a separate paragraph in font size 10 and single spacing (without quotation marks). These quoting paragraphs will be justified, like the body text, but must have an indentation of 1.25 cm on the left and 1.75 on the first line.

Quotes and references in different languages than the contribution's original language will not be translated in the body text (except for procedural need) but in a footnote, where the translator will be recognized.

Here are some further instructions that should be taken into account:

  • Any direct or indirect quotation must refer to the final bibliography
  • Text erasure within a quote will be marked with ellipses in brackets: […]
  • The references must follow the structure “(surname, year: page/s)” in parentheses.
  • If it is an indirect quote or does not refer to a specific page of a work, it will not be necessary to mark its number: “(surname, year)”. For example: (Cervera, 2006)
  • If the quoted author's name is in the context, it will not be repeated “(year: page/s)”. For example: (2006: 197)
  • When several works by the same author and published in the same year are cited, they will be distinguished by lowercase letters next to the year of publication of the text (a, b, c...). For example: (Cervera, 2007b).
  • When cited web pages do not include a date, the date of consultation or update of the web page will be noted in parentheses. If the document is not paginated, it will not be necessary to include the number of the page or pages.

Bibliography

While these guidelines do not indicate otherwise, bibliographic references must comply with the guidelines established by the seventh edition of the APA Publications Manual (2019).

They will appear at the end of the article, arranged alphabetically by the author's surname. Its format, again, will be Times New Roman in size 12 with justified text and single line spacing; the indentation, on the other hand, will be French: while the first line will not present an indentation, the following will have an indentation of 1.25 cm.

When several works by the same author are listed, the authors' names will not be repeated, but a long dash (-) will be used.

  • Book references will be arranged as follows: "Surname, Name (year): Book title. Plaza: Editorial". For example:

Cervera Salinas, Vicente (2006): El síndrome de Beatriz en la literatura hispanoamericana. Madrid: Iberoamericana/Vervuert.

(In the case of a translated work, the translators' name will be included in parentheses behind the title).

  • References to research articles or reviews appearing in journals will be arranged as follows: «Surname, Name (year): "Title of the article or review". Magazine: [year, vol., No.], Pp. xx-xx ». For example:

Bolognese, Chiara (2012). “Jugando con la otredad: La sombra del caminante de Ena Lucía Portela”. Cartaphilus. Revista de investigación y crítica estética, 10, 14-20.

  • The book chapter references will be arranged as follows: «Surname, Name (year): "Title of the book chapter". In Surname, Name (Ed./Comp./Coord.): Book title (pp. Xx-xx). Plaza: Editorial ». For example:

New York: IDEA.

  • References to Thesis or Doctoral Thesis will be arranged as follows: «Surname, Name (year): Title of the thesis (Master's Thesis / Doctoral Thesis). University [where the defense was held]: Country ». For example:

Saura Clares, Alba (2018): El movimiento argentino Teatro Abierto (1981-1985): escena, política y poéticas dramáticas (Tesis Doctoral). Universidad de Murcia: España.

  • The references of papers in academic congresses, conferences, or masterclasses will be arranged as follows: «Surname, Name (date): "Title of the presentation". Symposium or conference read on "behalf of the Congress, "Venue". For example:

Millares, Selena (16 de octubre, 2019): “Góngora como logosfera. El caso de Neruda”. Conferencia leída en “La recepción de Góngora en la literatura hispanoamericana. De la época colonial al siglo XXI”, Córdoba (España).

Images

If the texts are accompanied by images, these must respect copyright and have the corresponding licenses under the sole responsibility of the author of the article. The images must be inserted in the text accompanied by a caption indicating the number of the figure (they will be numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals) and its title or legend, if necessary. The caption will be written centered in Times New Roman in size 10 as follows: “Figure x. Title or legend”. When the text refers to an image, it must be indicated in the body of the text which image it is as follows: “(Figure x)”.
