Knowledge and bioethical attitudes of ICU nurses towards donation after circulatory death in pandemic Covid 19
Abstract
Limitation of life-sustaining treatment is practice in Critical Care Units and related to controlled donation after circulatory death. This is a challenge for nursing professionals, who are not familiar with this type of donation
Objective: Analyze the knowledge and bioethical attitudes of nursing personnel in limiting life support treatment and donation after circulatory death.
A descriptive and transversal study was carried out in the ICU of the Hospital Virgen de la Arrixaca. Data collection was carried out through a validated questionnaire during the Covid-19 pandemic alert.
Twenty-eight nurses participated in the study. Seventy-five percent are familiar with the LTSV and believe that LTSV decision should be made jointly by physicians and nurses but indicate that in daily practice this is not the case. 41,2% expressed ethical concerns about withdrawing life support treatment. 89,3% agree with organ donation after LTSV but only 42,8% would apply organ preservation measures prior to the patient's death.
Nursing professionals do not participate in decision-making at the end of their patients' lives and they show a lack of information regarding intensive care oriented towards organ donation. However, they have bioethical attitudes oriented to respect the autonomy and dignity of the person
