FUNCTIONAL AND MORPHOLOGICAL HETEROGENEITY OF GH CELLS IN OVINE. AGE AND SEX INFLUENCES
Abstract
Influence of age and sex about morphofunctional characteristics of somatotroph cells in ovine Segureña bread (6 lambs males and females—, 3 rams and 3 ewes in anoestrus) is studied using immunocytochemical procedures for light and electron microscopy. GH cells appear isolated in lambs and forming groups in adults. The number of GH cells decreases in female adults. Ultrastructurally there is a prevalence of synthetically active cells in lambs probably due to a high need of hormone. However, storage cells are abundant in adult animals perhaps due to a lower demand of growth hormone in this life stage. Granule size of GH cells varies showing the heterogeneity of this cellular type; this characteristic does not seem to be related to functional activity.Downloads
