USE OF STATINS IN ATHEROSCLEROSIS ANIMAL MODELS
Abstract
Animals have been used as experimental models in atherosclerosis-related research since the turn of the past century. Several drugs have been proved in order to reduce coronary events, risk factors and associated vascular lesions in aorta and coronary arteries. Statins, inhibitors of hydroxymethylglutaryl-coenzyme A reductase, are highly potent cholesterol-lowering agents. The therapeutic potential of these drugs has been experimentally studied in several atherosclerosis animal models, showing reductions in plasmatic cholesterol levels and atherosclerotic lesions of aorta and coronary arteries. Furthermore, these effects have been also proved in humans.Downloads
