Abstract

In November 1837, the publication of the Ordinance regarding the military draft obliged each young man of a certain age to join the army. However, its characteristics, the possibility of avoiding this military service by paying for it, as well as the irregularities that occurred, caused the flight of a large amount of young men who wanted to avoid enlisting. In the first part of this paper, we briefly summarize the various laws regarding the military draft. Then, we analyze the connection between illegal emigration and the administrative processes carried out to complete the quota established for the province of Málaga between 1837 and 1868.
