Abstract

In this article the author deals with four characters of Protestant denomination who appear in the works of Baroja; he identifies the personality and follows the development of two of them as well as analysing the treatmant given to all four by Baroja. One of the characters is George Borrow, who appears in the guise of Mr. Tack in El Mayorazgo de Labraz. Luis de Usoz y Río is a Quaker bibliophile and editor, devoted to the difusion of Protestant literature, a task in which Baroja's ancestors had colaborated secretly from their printing works. Fernando Brunet, identified by Baroja as Don Fernando, mediates between Ignacio Ramón Baroja, great uncle of the writer, and Luis de Usoz. Fernando Brunet was commissioned by Usoz to secretly import and export Protestant books in San Sebastian. Pedro de Vegas Hernández is a bookseller who appears anonymously in Los visionarios. The author contrasts him with the character of the novel and adds biographic information.
