Abstract

The substitution of the United States for Spain in practically all its dominions in America, Asia and Oceania in 1898, after the Hispano-North American War, is the outcome of a process caused by an expansionist sector of the political American class. A sector that had taken advantage of the weakness and Spanish internal divisions, the independence aspirations of Cuba and the Philippines, and the lack of interest on the part of Europe in the colonial matters of Spain. Therefore, the year 1898 is the date in which the United States first expanded territorially out of the American continent, starting a new stage in its “evident destiny”.
