Abstract

This study explored the effect of majority group social identity on prejudice against Gypsies in Spain. To manipulate subjects’ (80 non-Gypsy high school students, 40 male and 40 female) social identity, the two labels ‘payo’ (non-Gypsy) and ‘castellano’ (Spaniard) were used to refer to the majority group. The results suggest that prejudice against the Gypsy out-group is rooted in the self-concept of the majority group, and furthermore, that language is a valid strategy for understanding the dynamics underlying between-group interaction.
