Abstract

The consecration of the Reformed Spanish Church’s catehdral, in Madrid, as well as its bishop’s, coincided with a political offensive against Sagasta’s liberal government. The episcopacy and some catholic senators and diputies regarded these events as an offence against the Constitution and as a break with the limited tolerant spirit of Alfonso XII’s Restoration. The Liberal Party defended its law interpretation. That very year both the evangelical Chapel and the School were opened in the Cuatro Caminos area in Madrid. The present paper touches upon the language and the demands of the Catholicism in relation to the religious freedom.
