Abstract

The confrontation between the Conservative Government in Lisbon and the Progressive Council in Porto plunges the country into a civil war from October, 1846. After a failed Anglo-Spanish mediation, it was decided in London to carry out a military intervention to put an end to the conflict. Naval forces fron Spain, France, and the United Kingdom, gathered in Portuguese waters, collaborate with the fleet loyal to the government of Mary II. The Spanish fleet, commanded by José de la Cruz, takes part in the actions in Porto and Setubal. And also in the return of the Madeira and Azores Island to the royal obedience.
