Abstract

The project of provincial division (44 provinces) proposed by Felipe Bauzá and revised by Miguel de Lastarría (1813-1814) is the main example of the wide plan of reforms carried out during our first liberal stage. The aim was to correct the almost chaotic legal-administrative geography given by the Áncien Regime. Its design was based on three principles: the maintance of the historical kingdoms, its division into more operative provinces, and the introduction of other new ones in the peripheral territories if necessary. The project Bauzá, Lastarría is an important precedent of the definite provincial division boosted by Javier de Burgos in 1833.
