Abstract

Interculturality in Spain (and, at a higher level, in the European Union) under the effects of the massive recent inmigration implies an impressive and difficult effort. In this way it is not only necessary to talk about the differences among the minority cultures but also about their rights to survive and develope beyond being simply integrated or assimited by other groups. However the respect to diversity and a pacific coexistence among citizens should not be imposed at expense of both the fundamental rights of the individual and the minority and the principles that govern a democratic society. Therefore, the intercultural project should rest upon such a difficult balance, and not upon the typical ambiguous discourse, based on obsolete principles and ideas extracted from the clasic liberalism (liberty and equality as it was understood in the XIX th century, pseudotolerance, etc.). Ideas that have nothing to do with the present reality.
