Abstract

All over its first 120 years of existence, the University of La Habana´s Library was in reality that internally lend by the local Sociedad Economica de Amigos del País. Once this was relocated, the University had to face the need of building from zero its own collection. The dramatic facts that took place during the second half of the XIXth century did clearly influence the development of the University, and by extension, that of the Library. Throughout the XIXth century, the University of La Habana´s Library suffered from lack of funding and scarcity of librarian supplies, so that it seldom sufficed at human resources to accomplish its goals, for those times primarily to attend users´ demand.
