Abstract

This article offers a synthesis of Spain’s action in the Western Sahara desert, from the moment the Spanish Protectorate over the coast comprised between Bojador Cape and the West Bay was proclaimed to 1975 with the tripartite agreement and the desertion of the territory. In these pages the causes that motivated the late colonization of the territory (in fact, it took Spaniards forty-eight years to begin the occupation of the Sahara as a whole) will be analyzed, as well as the ups and downs that led into the unfi nished decolonization, leaving behind a territorial dispute which not only remains, but is also far from a defi nite solution.
