Abstract

The geographic proximity from Mauritania to the Canary Islands has had an infl uence on Spain-Mauritania relations. Since the independence of Mauritania the bilateral agenda has been dominated by the ups and downs of the decolonization process and the confl ict of the Western Sahara and by the access to Mauritania’s fi shing grounds. During the last years the relations have been diversifi ed due to the inclusion into the agenda of the cooperation to the development, the cooperation in security matters and the control of the irregular immigration arriving to Canary Islands.
