Abstract

The few relations maintained between Tunisia and Spain along S. XX where supported by special international conditions such us: the French infl uence in the Magreb up to the sixties with the consequent opposition of the French government to Franco’s; the option of socialism elected by the Tunisian independent party Neo- Destour, leaded by Habib Burguiba, and the discontinuous contacts of Tunisia with Egipt, nation considered to be the best friend Arab country of Spain. However a positive change was produced when Burguiba and his party Neo-Destour achieved the independence and one year later, in march 1957, the president of the Tunisian Government visited Spain. The chief of the Spanish State, Francisco Franco, received him with the highest honours, as he used to do with the most important Arab authorities. Both leaders, tried to maintain friendly relationships until the end of their respective governments.
