Abstract

Throughout the period during which they shared control of the Protectorate of Morocco, relations between France and Spain were, with rare exceptions, strained. This was especially the case during the two World Wars, the Spanish Civil War and the years preceding the independence of Morocco in 1956. This article examines the historical background to this state of affairs. Today, more than 50 years after the «protected» country was granted its independence, it is clear that the traditional rivalry between the original «protecting» powers, even if tempered to some extent within the context of the European Union, is still alive and, according to the circumstances, springs to the surface with more or less vigour.
