Abstract

Spanish contemporary historiography has paid little attention to women who, during the 19th century and the first third of the 20th century, were forced to emigrate because of political reasons. The emigration of women, similar to that of men was related to the political and military ups and downs of this period. In the exile of 1939 women were more salient due to the fact that since the beginning of the twenties they had progressively acquired a more important role in society, politics and culture. On the basis of these considerations, in this paper, I will try to analyze this process and contribute some insights for its better understanding.
