Installation of automated external defibrillators in sports centers with aquatic facilities in the Region of Murcia: A sports management perspective
Abstract
Cardiovascular disease is a major health risk and remains the leading cause of mortality worldwide. While physical activity offers numerous health benefits, it can also trigger underlying cardiovascular conditions. In a life-threatening emergency, rapid action is key to patient survival, especially in the case of myocardial infarction or sudden death. The use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) means the difference between life and death. Sports centers with aquatic facilities are those with the largest surface area and average daily attendance, and therefore those with the greatest risk for users. This study analyzed 39 sports centers with aquatic facilities in the Region of Murcia, recording the number, brand and model of each AED installed. It was found that all the sports centers studied had installed at least one AED, the predominant model being the Philips HS1 (49.3%). A total of 41% of the centers studied reported a life-threatening emergency in the last five years, with 19% of deaths. Therefore, within the sports management strategy, managers should implement adequate conditions of accessibility, proper location and maintenance of the AED, as well as staff training, as part of a comprehensive cardioprotection plan.
