Reading, Writing, and Libraries in the Psychiatric Hospital
Abstract
Libraries in psychiatric hospitals played a significant role in the so-called moral treatment. Books were used as distraction and entertainment, as well as therapy (bibliotherapy or therapy through reading). Accompanying them, we see the appearance of various publications where the patients’ writings were disseminated, with the double purpose of promoting intellectual activity, as well as projecting the institution outside. The hospital fanzines, which emerged early in the 19th century, have survived over the years, adapting to the times. From a historiographical and first-person point of view, those modest publications, many of them at serious risk of being lost forever, acquire a special added value as primary sources of knowledge of the institutional day-to-day. The work, part of a larger project (www.psiquifanzines.com), is based on the review of a large number of publications edited, with the participation of patients, in Spanish psychiatric hospitals during the last century. If it hasalready allowed us to learn more about the institutional daily life as reflected in its pages, as well as other aspects related to the transition and psychiatric reform in Spain, on this occasion, it will help us to illustrate aspects related to libraries, reading and writing in psychiatric hospitals.
