Abstract

The aim of this article is to explore the relationship between the sociological categories developed by Bourdieu – habitus, symbolic capital, symbolic violence – and the concept of “white ignorance” proposed by Charles W. Mills. In particular, it seeks to understand how whiteness, understood both as symbolic capital and as a form of social power, is perpetuated through mechanisms of ignorance institutionalized and daily practiced in the social world. Through a critical comparative analysis, it will be examined how both authors approach the problem of domination and how their theories can be combined to offer a deeper understanding of the epistemologies of ignorance in the racial context. Works by authors who have analyzed these dynamics in the context of racial segregation and migration will also be used, such as Bonilla-Silva (2006) or Barbara Samaluk (2014).
