Abstract

The analysis of the tragic nature of modern culture is one of George Simmel's most important contributions. The Berlin-born author developed his concept of the tragic in several works and applied it to various objects of study including art and artists. This short essay discusses, first, the concept of the artist and tragic art that Simmel defines for the study of Michelangelo's life and work. Secondly, Simmel's theoretical proposal on artistic personalities and cultural productions that reflect the tragic condition of modernity is used to analyse the biography and work of one of the most important Spanish poets of the Generation of '27 and one of the most influential in recent Spanish poetry, Luis Cernuda.
