Abstract

Norbert Elias wrote his major work, The Process of Civilization, in the middle of the "European civil war" (1914-1945). Perhaps there is no book on the history of sociology in which the purpose of research -that is, to disclose the foundations of the Western civilization process- shows such a sharp contrast to the historic context where the work is written and to the author's biographical experiences. The paradoxical condition of Elias's work has been widely criticized. This article therefore seeks to question the "theft history" attributed to Elias' theory of civilization. On the whole, Elias' work is a compendium of concepts and empirical analyzes of unquestionable validity for understanding the cycle of violence that the year 1914 opened in Europe and that he experienced and suffered.
