Abstract

This paper examines E. P. Thompson’s critique of Louis Althusser’s philosophy from an epistemological point of view. First, it sets out and assesses three althusserian theses on Marxist social theory. Second, it analyzes Thompson’s alternative and suggests a reformulation of his criticism that makes it more plausible and productive.
