Abstract

This paper wants to outline the key issues of a historical sociology of knowledge and advance some theoretical principles that could help to guide future empirical research in this field. The first part of the paper shows the main theoretical orientations, temporal frameworks, and units of analysis that different sociological currents have used to study cognition in a historical key. The paper then traces some sociological principles from Norbert Elias’ work on human knowledge and “long duration” to delineate subjects like the intergenerational accumulation, distribution, and transmission of knowledge.
