Beyond vocation: the role of extrinsic motivations in choosing a career in guidance
Abstract
Educational guidance plays an essential role within the education system due to its contribution to the holistic development of students and the provision of advice to the educational community. However, research specifically focusing on the factors influencing the choice of this profession remains scarce. The aim of this study was to analyse the extrinsic motivations associated with choosing a career in educational guidance, as well as their relationship with certain perceptions of the profession and possible differences based on personal and professional variables. A quantitative, cross-sectional, descriptive-correlational and non-experimental study was conducted with a sample of 39 educational guidance professionals from the Region of Murcia. A questionnaire based on the FIT-Choice model, adapted to the context of educational guidance, was used for data collection. The results showed that intrinsic and vocational motivations are the most relevant in career choice, with a particular emphasis on an interest in teaching, a liking for guidance word and social contribution. However, certain extrinsic factors, particularly job stability, job security and the perception of having a fixed salary, also play a significant role. Furthermore, extrinsic motivation was positively associated with the perceived social status of the professional specialism. Overall, the results show that the choice of a career guidance role is influenced by the interaction between vocational factors and perceived working conditions.
