Policies on the use of artificial intelligence

RELIS establishes the following guidelines on the use of AI and fully endorses the Guidance on the Use of Artificial Intelligence provided by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE):

  • AI cannot be an author: AI tools do not meet the requirements for authorship (ability to assume responsibility, provide consent, or make an intellectual contribution).

  • Mandatory human authorship: Only humans can be listed as authors of an article, as they are the only ones responsible for the integrity and veracity of the content.

  • Full author responsibility: Authors are entirely responsible for the content of their manuscript, including any parts generated by AI. They must verify its accuracy, relevance, and completeness, and ensure there are no biases or false information.

  • Mandatory transparency: The use of AI tools in writing, creating images, or analyzing data must be clearly declared in the manuscript, generally in the "Materials and Methods" section or in the "Acknowledgements."

  • Review and oversight: Editors and reviewers must monitor the use of AI and be capable of detecting automatically generated content.

  • Conflicts of interest: The use of AI must be transparent to avoid hidden conflicts of interest.
