Abstract

The paper outlines an approach to balancing trust and accountability in university teaching, based on the concept of a fully ‘professional’ profession. It is suggested that, once academic teachers have undertaken and continue to undertake appropriate professional development and appraisal programmes, external institutional audit should be at the level of the provision of such development and appraisal, together with an appropriate human resources policy. Only if there are serious doubts about these, should audit drill deeper and investigate issues such as the processes and products of curricular design or the student experience.
