Abstract

This paper describes an experience in assessment in a problem based learning environment. The underlying assumption is that the assessment system has a significant influence on learning, so it should be chosen with extreme care. If learning is understood as a process, assessment be-comes one of the many variables in the picture. The system developed seems to be valid and satisfy some basic quality guarantees. Continuous teacher assessment, peer assessment, self-assessment and portfolios have been included. Assessment criteria and their weight on the final grade are communicated at the beginning of the course and negotiated with the students. The final end is to actively involve the student in his/her own learning process, since it is understood that only by assuming and sharing this responsibility it is possible to help students in their growth to become free and responsible citizens able to act a mediating role in social conflicts.
