Abstract

Teaching quality is often associated exclusively with student opinion as shown in surveys, which means that lecturers are good if, and only if, they are well-rated by the students. But that is quite simply the opinion of the students, just one of the great many parameters to be taken into consideration when it comes to evaluating a lecturer’s teaching work. We measure what is easy to measure, while tending to ignore important aspects that cannot be measured. In such surveys, what is often paramount is a lecturer’s interpersonal and communication skills, and nothing more. Lecturer evaluation is a complex business, and simplifying it by looking at skindeep aspects – due to lack of alternatives, out of demagogy, ignorance, vested interests, etc. – is tantamount to denaturing it dangerously.
