Abstract

Its' almost two decades ago that a new women organization went into the popular movement of Gatemala. This group was born beyong the borders of this country, under the protection of Mexico, where tens of thousands of guatemaltese were force to escape at the beginning of the 80s when violence and death swept their homes. The “Mamá Maquín” organization, that was originated in the everyday fight to survive of the refugee women, soon became in a strong movement, that was present and visible when they came back to Guatemala. Once there, it was crucial in the social reconstruction of the country.
