Abstract

The organisation of the urban system in Northamerica, and specifically the two urban subsystems of Canada and the northern part of the United States quite linked to the Canadian system are analysed. It is observed the existence of two large regions where it is noticeable the development of the corresponding urban networks, which originate urban systems with an integrated functioning, together with other two large areas of human emptiness and, consequently, very little dense urban networks, giving rise to neat spatial discontinuities. It is also observed that the weakness of the Canadian urban system makes it resemble an «archipielago » where several little cohesive units exist together. At the same time, the most dynamic ones show a strong integration with the corresponding units of the urban system of the United States. This behaviour becomes the dynamic and central part in reference to Canada.
