Abstract

The long way followed by Germany has been contrary to other countries. The towns in Germany have been the basis that have enabled the building of the country. This can be seen when studying the national urban hierarchy and also in the autonomous organization of the regional urban networks. Each «länder» han been able to achieve a quite autonomous urban subsystem. However, its high population density —irregularly distributed—, and noticeable territorial socioeconomic disorders, are aspects that transfer their influence to the evident existing lack of balance of the network. Perhaps the process of reunification can become the way to introduce outstanding changes in search of a major integration and balance of the whole German urban system.
