Abstract

Numerous studies have alerted on the desertifi cation process of the Region of Murcia, in the extreme south east of the Iberia peninsula. Its semiarid climate, but also an inadequate management of its fertile soil, are responsible for the impoverishment of its natural resources. The Ecological Footprint (HE) of a population is a measure of the pressure on the land in terms of hectares per capita used by its inhabitants for their subsistence. Together with the biocapacity of the land, it measures the sustainability of the territory. In this work, we have measured the HE of the Region of Murcia for two successive years, 1995 and 2001. A clear parallelism is observed between the variation of this index and desertifi cation.
