Abstract

Mesoscale Corivective Systcins (MCS) are responsiblc for heavy precipitation events and \ometirries severc wciithcr. Since 1989, every MCS developed in Spain and the Westem Mediterrancnn areii is systerriatically studied at the Spanish Meteorological Institutc (INM/ STAP) using Mcteoiat infrarcd imagery. From the fa11 of 1992 on, these studies havc been complcted with Cloiid-to-Ground (CG) lightning data. Two MCS developed by 8-9 October 1992 over the Western Mediterrariecin sea. In this work we study the synoptic and mesoscale frameworks leading to MCS development and their life cycles trough data from Meteosat IR imagery and CG lightning data. A close agreement between these two datasets is observed. This could provide some basis for nowcasting and very-shori range forecasting about the evoluiion of this kind of systems.
