Abstract

Rainfall figures for Honduras are very unever and this is a result of its physiographical shape as it is a very mountainous and compartmentalised country. The Trade wind system is the most important factor as far as rainfall is concemed. Leeward of the ENE trade wind, there is a significant decrease in rainfall especially in depressed areas in the centre of the country where air masses and air streams amve with features of a «foehn» as they warm up in their continuous descent (rainfall of around 800 rnm. per annum), while, on both sea fronts (the Caribbean and the Pacific), the rains caused by the tropical sea air are abundant (above 2.000 mm.). Torrential and plentiful rains fa11 over the whole country because of tropical disturbances (tropical cyclones and waves from the East) bringing real floods.
